7 Morning Rituals That Make Me A Better Entrepreneur

ID-1008118In theory, it should be pretty simple to justify a good morning ritual. After all, many of the world’s top athletes and even CEOs are famous for their quirky morning habits. In reality, building a routine that includes doing a lot of stuff before the sun has even risen is tough.

How does that old saying go again? It’s the tough things in life that are worth having. I think I modified that but you know it’s the truth.

What I do in the morning is what works for me and that doesn’t necessarily mean it will work for everybody. I do believe it’s important that you have a system that gets you prepared to be at your peak for the day.

1. Get To Bed At A Reasonable Time

The best thing that happens for me is I get to bed the night before at a reasonable hour. I never burn the candle at both ends and that’s key.

I know there have been famous short sleepers like Margaret Thatcher and even Barack Obama but the overwhelming amount of data proves that getting a good night’s rest is always a good idea.

2. Never Skip Breakfast

Right after I get up, I have a good stretch and then make a healthy breakfast. Whatever it is that you do, make sure you get some good quality food into you before you start the day.

Studies have shown that skipping breakfast not only makes you more likely to suffer heart attack, it also kills your productivity. There is no good reason to skip breakfast, especially if you are short on time. Do you have time to run at 50% efficiency all day when you could have run at 100%?

3. Move Your Body Before Work

If I have my way then I go to the gym after breakfast and work out with my trainer. My energy level is highest in the morning so I want to be doing my exercises then.   I want to be looking after my health and my body while I’m at my peak. If I waited until the end of the day to do my exercises then I would be at my lowest and putting everyone else before myself.  You need to put yourself first.

4. Get Hydrated

After the gym I go into the office and the first thing I do is get my water. I make sure I’ve got my water bottle handy during meetings and wherever I go throughout the day.

If this sounds too basic then it sounds like you need to refresh yourself on the miracle that is water.

5. Do The Day’s Most Important Task First

I always try to do the most important thing that I need to get done before the phone starts ringing and there are any interruptions to stall my progress. I figure out whatever my number one priority is and dedicate that time to it while I’m at my peak performance with minimal distractions.

6. Set Designated Email & Phone Time

Turn off all your beeps and buzzers from your phone and emails so you’re not getting distracted. Commit to a specific amount of time that you’re going to deal with those issues and go back to them at those times.

If you decide that you’re going to read your email three times that day, set the time that you plan to do it. Whatever works for you. The point is to commit that to your schedule and create that system.

7. Exercise

Yes, I’m mentioning this twice. If there is one thing in this list that is most important, it is to do something physical in the morning, every morning. There is no question that I am MUCH more productive during the day if I start it by working out.

Create Your System

I’ve talked a lot about having a system for your business and why that’s so important but you also need to have a system for how you run your life – before, during and after work. I believe that’s really the key to being successful in all aspects of life.

I’m with you on these, except I do the exercising at night. That’s a function of a 45 minute commute and that I’m just not going to get up at 4:45 in the morning to exercise and hope to make the drive to Ann Arbor in decent traffic conditions. I’m finding though that exercising at night, for me, gets a lot of the day’s stress out of me.
